Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact – Review
The little brother to the XZ2, the Xperia XZ2 Compact is a smaller version packing some serious power and capabilities. Its camera and chipset will better nearly all other phones in this size, with its 5-inch screen and small frame. This is one of the best options out there if you were looking for a top spec device that will slip into your pockets.
There isn’t much direct competition in the compact phone department, but as this Xperia still shares many features with its big brother – those who may think smartphones are getting a bit too big now have a very strong alternative.
The Snapdragon 845 chipset, 19MP camera, 64GB of storage and HDR capable display all make their way onto this device. These features are not found on any device of similar size at all, in fact the closest smartphone that does compare this spec sheet is the S9 – which is much bigger.
There is no thumb stretching on this screen, reminiscent of years gone by and continuing the appeal of Sony Compact phones since their launch in 2013. It fits snugly into the palm, making it a very pleasant experience in using and holding the device. Sony has not gone for the thinness trend of every other manufacturer – and it is great for that, it’s a brilliant alternative.
The screen has seen mass improvement from the previous gen XZ Compact that had a 720p resolution, the XZ2 Compact now rocks a Full HD screen with a 1080p resolution that also supports HDR and Sony’s X-Reality engine that up scales standard dynamic range content to HDR. This screen is very bright, and brings ultra-saturated colours with great contrast for an LCD.
Users of the Xperia XZ2 Compact will find it fairly easy to get through a whole day on one charge, with the slightly bigger than last gen battery (now 2,870mAh.) The phone comes with fast charging ability; sadly you won’t get a fast charger in the box however. Sony has also decided against adding wireless charging capabilities to the Compact for now.
It is a big step up from the outgoing XZ Compact in many respects, it has higher screen resolution, camera upgrades and more storage and generally a much improved device. There a few disappointments in regards to the omission of the head phone jack and a poor front camera. However, in comparison to other small/compact smartphones – none come close.
